New Project: Oil Insert for the UCO Mini Lantern — Initial Thoughts & Design Feedback
We're designing a new oil insert for the UCO Mini — here's where we are and how you can help shape it.
We have some exciting news for our fellow UCO Lantern enthusiasts. After the success of our inserts for the Original Lanterns, we've decided to start working on a new design for the UCO Mini Lantern.
Design Challenges
Designing for the UCO Mini does come with its own set of challenges, but also some major pluses.
As many of you are aware, the twist-out base isn't flat like the Original version due to the small pieces of plastic that hold the three metal prongs that support the candle. Because of this, I think we'll have to design and make either a custom plastic twist-out base to replace the stock one, or alter the shape of the insert so it fits inside this space.
The Mini also doesn't close in on itself like the Original, so there's nothing to stop the insert moving around inside the lantern when transporting. We are going to have to figure out a way to fix the insert in place so that it can be easily transported inside the lantern.
The Good News
The lantern is a lot wider than the Original Lantern, which means the insert should be able to hold the same amount of fuel, if not more, compared to our inserts for the Original Lanterns — giving 4–6 hours of burn time, if not more.
Based on feedback from the previous inserts, we'll also be reducing the wall thickness of the oil chamber so that it can hold more fuel and be slightly lighter too.
