INTRODUCING THE FF NESTING STOVE

After six months of development, we're proud to finally introduce the Forest Fundamentals Nesting Stoves.

From the outset, we had two main objectives: to optimise the stove for multiple fuel types and to create a functional, space-saving nesting system.

Designing a multi-fuel stove was extremely important, as it would allow the stove to adapt to different terrains, trip lengths, and climates, and—most importantly—people's preferred fuel types.

The stove accommodates wood, solid fuel (esbit tabs, or hexamine tablets), and alcohol burners.

For all fuel types, countless design changes were made, focusing on two key testing parameters: fuel efficiency and reducing boil times.

At Forest Fundamentals, we spend a lot of time outdoors and understand the importance of efficient, organised gear systems. Our goal for the nesting system was to provide enough storage space to store all cook, fire, and water gear.

With everything fitting neatly inside the stove and it’s carrying bag, the whole system remains compact, accessible, and easily fits inside your pack or side pouch.

USING THE STOVES WITH WOOD FUEL

The air vent hole placement is designed to optimise the air-to-fuel ratio, ensuring efficient combustion, steady heat output, and controlled wood burning.

The size of the feeding port has been maximised for easy refuelling while limiting excess airflow. Wood can also be fed in from the top when pots or cups are not in use.

To prevent scorching the ground, the stove has an elevated ash pan plate that traps embers. The gaps between the stove legs allow for easy ash removal, preventing buildup during burning.

If it starts raining and you need to reposition the stove under a tarp or onto a rock for maximum heat output while cooking, you can do so while it's burning by sliding two tent pegs through the slots and using them as handles.

USING THE STOVES WITH ALCOHOL BURNERS & SOLID FUEL

When using alcohol burners or fuel tabs, the cup or bottle height can be lowered to maintain the optimal distance from the flame source to ensure falser boil times.

Alcohol burners, or fuel tabs are positioned at the base of the stove, where reduced airflow naturally acts as a windshield, improving fuel efficiency.

The stove includes a titanium basin for solid fuel tabs. The basin contains any mess after melting and prevents the tabs from sliding around, localising the flame and reducing burn times.

Both fuel types ignite easily with a ferro rod, either from the top or through the main feeding port.

The stove's base stores multiple fuel tabs and an FF alcohol burner tin, secured by the removable ash pan plate. The stove's base doesn't fit all alcohol burners—please check the dimensions for reference.

THE SPACE-SAVING NESTING SYSTEM

The nesting system saves space by storing essentials like water bottles and cups inside the stove. While bulkier than flat-packed stoves alone, it takes up less space when combined with gear you already carry.

The stove nests with a standard 750ml cup and 32oz wide-mouth bottle—an already popular nesting combination it ensures compatibility with peoples existing gear.

We also believe the 750ml size offers the most flexibility outdoors. It provides a practical boiling capacity, requiring only 2-4 boils for a full day’s water supply for one person.

The 750ml size is also large enough for cooking and eating, removing the need to carry a separate eating tray.

The stove's base offers further storage for small items like ferro rods, fire tabs, or an FF alcohol burner tin, secured by the removable ash pan plate.

The upgraded stove bag also provides extra storage for essentials like LifeStraws, Millbank bags, and cotton rags, ensuring all fire, cook, and water gear fits in one system.

Unlike flat-packed stoves, it won’t bend or warp with use, and there’s no struggle to slot stiff parts together in the cold!

If you need two cups—one for coffee and one for food—a 300ml cup fits perfectly on top of the bottle, with the 750ml cup nesting below.

DESIGNED FOR COMPATIBILITY WITH PEOPLES' EXISTING GEAR

In the design of the stove, we have tried to accommodate peoples’ gear as much as possible. The stove works with popular alcohol burners including he Trangia, and common Titanium models.

The 750ml cup nests perfectly with various bottle designs, including 32oz wide-mouth bottles like Nalgene (stainless steel & plastic), Pathfinder wide-mouth bottles, and the Stanley Adventure series. It also fits Grayl filter bottles, though adding a bandana around the base is advised to prevent rattling.

Various cups/pots will also nest perfectly inside the 750ml size such as the TOAKS 375ml and 450ml Cup, or the TOAKS Titanium 370ml Double Wall Cup.

For nesting inquiries, send us your gear's dimensions, and we'll check compatibility. Detailed dimensions are also available at the bottom of the page.

Do I need to buy new gear to nest with the stove? +-

We've designed the stove to be as versatile as possible, accommodating a wide range of cups and bottles. Ultimately, it comes down to your preferred gear and whether it fits within the stove's dimensions.

The stoves are designed to nest with standard 750ml cups, including those with bail handles.

Most 750ml cups are standard sizes, cups from brands like TOAKS, Snow Peak, and MSR will fit within the stove system.

Cups smaller than 750ml will generally fit, though they may leave extra space around the edges. The extra space is great for storing small essentials like sporks or ferro rods, though some rattling may occur. Wrapping a bandana around the cup with fix any rattling issues.

Most 32oz bottles, including Nalgenes, Pathfinder Bottles, and the Stanley Adventure Series, are designed to nest perfectly with a standard 750ml cup. Grayl bottles also nest well, though there is a bit of extra space around the edges.

Will the stove fit my existing alcohol burners? +-

Most likely, yes—the stoves are designed to accommodate Trangia alcohol burners and other common sizes of alcohol stoves. If you're unsure whether your burner will fit the stove, feel free to reach out, and we’ll be happy to check the dimensions for you. The stove also comes with detailed instructions on how to accommodate burners of different sizes.

Most alcohol burners will work inside the stove; however, Trangia and other common titanium models won’t fit inside the storage compartment at the base. Only Forest Fundamentals Alcohol Tins are specifically designed to fit this space.

Non-FF alcohol burners can still be stored inside the 750ml cup for transport, ensuring they remain part of your nesting system without the need for separate storage.

What fuel types is the designed to accommodate? +-

The stove is specifically designed to accommodate wood fuel, solid fuel tabs (such as hexamine, Esbit, and similar alternatives), and open-flame methylated spirit stoves.

All necessary components for using these fuel types are included as standard, with no additional add-ons required.

The stove includes a solid fuel tray for burning solid fuel tabs and cross beams for supporting alcohol burners. For more details on how the stove accommodates these fuel types, please click here.

The stoves can also accept small gas burners — full instructions are included on how to do this.

Does the stove come with a wind shield, and is one necessary? +-

To keep costs down, a windshield is not included as part of the stove. However, we are currently designing FF windshields, which we hope to make available in the coming months.

In most cases, a windshield isn’t needed when using wood, solid fuel, or alcohol burners, as the stove is designed to offer ample wind protection for these fuel types.

**Top Tip: In windy conditions, a simple and cost-effective way to enhance wind protection for alcohol burners and solid fuel tabs is to line the inside of the stove with tin foil. When not in use, the tin foil can be neatly wrapped and stored around the edges of the stove.

Does the stove come with a carrying bag? +-

Yes, the stove includes a cotton drawstring bag as standard. This bag is designed to be spacious enough to accommodate the entire nesting system, including bottles and cups, which is why it is extra long.

There are also options to upgrade to our Cordura carrying bag. This bag is intended to provide extra storage space for any fire, cook, or water gear that doesn't fit inside the nesting system. It's perfect for storing small essentials like sporks, cooking utensils, a Millbank bag, and a lifestaw, to name a few examples.

Does the stove come with a warranty, and what does it cover? +-

The stoves are covered with a 10-year warranty that guarantees protection against defects in workmanship and materials. If you encounter any issues with the stoves, feel free to reach out to us—we’re happy to help. Please note that the warranty does not cover damage resulting from misuse, neglect, or improper handling. For more info, please click here.

Can the stove accommodate different pot sizes? +-

The stove is designed for pots of different sizes. For pots that are narrower than the stove’s diameter, tent pegs or cross beams can be used to create stable support at different heights, depending on the fuel type being used.

For pots larger than the stove’s diameter, they can rest directly on top of the stove, with the cross beams providing additional stability if needed. The three-leg design ensures a secure and balanced setup, even when using heavier or oversised cookware.

Does the stove have features to reduce environmental impact? +-

Creating a fire-safe stove, and adhering to the ‘leave no trace’ philosophy was a top priority in the design process. We’ve incorporated an ash pan to capture all embers and ash produced by the stove. The ash pan is slightly elevated to prevent heat damage to the ground.

The main feeding port of the stove is intentionally slightly raised. During testing, we found that a lower opening allowed burning wood to spill out, increasing the risk of fire outside the stove.

As a multi-fuel stove, it provides versatility to comply with different fire regulations and restrictions. Depending on the environment, you can adapt the fuel source to accommodate bans on open fires or alcohol stoves.

What materials are used and where are the stoves made? +-

Currently, production of the stoves takes place overseas due to high minimum order quantities in the UK. However, all assembly is completed in the UK. The Sheffield-based metal fabricators require a minimum starting order of 1000 units. Once we reach this production scale, we fully intend to move manufacturing to the United Kingdom.

What is the delivery times on the stoves? +-

We ship all orders within 1-2 days. Delivery times: UK: 2-4 days, EU: 3-6 days, USA: 4-7 days. If delays occur, we’ll notify you promptly. All international orders include door-to-door tracking.
